Symposium
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant and escalating global health challenge. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are particularly hard-hit, experiencing a paradoxical crisis where many people lack access to antimicrobials while facing a growing burden of drug-resistant infections. The problem is exacerbated by the scarce availability of new antimicrobials, especially many recently approved antibiotics being accessible in only a few high-income countries. Efforts to improve access to novel antimicrobials need to be accompanied by concerted efforts to support rational use of antimicrobials – antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Though several AMS standards and guidelines exist, inconsistent implementation, poor compliance, and competing priorities make AMS implementation a challenge. Limited understanding of critical policy levers and the exact role of different stakeholders at the national and subnational levels represent a further gap in the successful uptake of AMS guidelines. Therefore, there is a need to develop practical pathways to mainstream AMS programs tailored to local priorities and capabilities with strategies strengthening AMS capacities for scale-up, sustainability, and impact, in order to ensure the sustained efficacy of new antibiotics. This demands a simultaneous commitment from all involved stakeholders, including policymakers, national regulatory authorities, insurance providers, health technology assessment agencies, health care facility governance and management (including the private sector where these antibiotics will be readily available to those who can afford), clinicians/prescribers, laboratory leads, AMS teams and researchers to create a stewardship-enabling ecosystem in LMICs.
The ASPICON 2024 team is thrilled to announce an elevator pitch event planned exclusively for residents and students, inviting innovators to showcase their ideas in a rapid-fire format.
ASPICON 2024 offers participants the chance to pitch their ideas in an elevator pitch competition, where they’ll have just a few minutes to convey the essence of their proposed solutions to a panel of judges and a live audience.
Your idea can be focused around:
- A new therapeutic modality for infections (including vaccine)
- A new diagnostic modality for infections
To participate, submit a brief proposal outlining your project idea and why it deserves a spot in the competition.
